Wisdom teeth - the third molars - usually arrive between 17 and 25, and they cause more trouble than any other tooth in the mouth. Most jaws simply do not have room for them, so they erupt at an angle, get stuck (impacted), or come through only partly and trap food and bacteria. This guide explains when a wisdom tooth extraction is genuinely needed, what it costs in Delhi in 2026, and what recovery actually feels like.
When does a wisdom tooth need to come out?
Not every wisdom tooth needs removal. A fully erupted, upright wisdom tooth that you can clean properly can often stay. We recommend removal when there is recurring pain or swelling around the tooth (pericoronitis), repeated food trapping, decay in the wisdom tooth or the molar in front of it, a cyst on X-ray, or when an impacted tooth is pushing on its neighbour. If you are mid-way through braces or Invisalign, your orthodontist may also advise removal to protect your result.
- Repeated pain, swelling or a bad taste around the back tooth
- Food constantly packing behind the last molar
- Decay or gum infection that keeps coming back
- A horizontally impacted tooth seen on an OPG or CBCT X-ray
- Pressure or damage to the healthy molar in front
Wisdom tooth removal cost in Delhi (2026)
At our Mayur Vihar Phase 1 clinic, a simple wisdom tooth extraction typically costs ₹3,000-₹6,000. A surgical removal of an impacted or partly-erupted tooth (which needs minor bone removal and sometimes sectioning the tooth) usually runs ₹6,000-₹12,000 per tooth, depending on difficulty. The price includes the OPG/CBCT planning, local anaesthesia, the procedure itself and the follow-up visit. A written, itemised quote should always be given before surgery - see our guide to choosing a clinic for why that matters.
Is the procedure painful?
The extraction itself is done under local anaesthesia, so you feel pressure but not pain. Modern surgical technique - a small, planned approach rather than brute force - means most patients are surprised by how straightforward it is. Discomfort comes afterwards, for 2-3 days, and is very manageable with the painkillers we prescribe. If you are anxious, tell us; we routinely treat nervous patients and patients who travel in from Patparganj, IP Extension and Preet Vihar.
Recovery: what the first week looks like
- Day 0-1: Bite on gauze, use ice packs, eat cool soft foods, rest. Some swelling is normal.
- Day 2-3: Swelling peaks then starts to settle. Begin gentle warm salt-water rinses.
- Day 4-7: Most people are back to normal eating. Avoid poking the socket with your tongue.
- Week 1+: Stitches (if any) dissolve or are removed at your review visit.
Avoid smoking, straws and vigorous spitting for the first few days - they can dislodge the clot and cause a painful 'dry socket'. Stick to soft foods, keep the area clean, and finish any antibiotics if prescribed.
Wisdom tooth pain that can't wait
Severe swelling, fever, difficulty opening your mouth or trouble swallowing means the infection is spreading and you should be seen the same day. Read our emergency dentist guide for East Delhi for first-aid steps, or book an appointment and call us on the way. We see urgent cases from across Mayur Vihar Phase 2, Mayur Vihar Phase 3, Pandav Nagar, Noida and Indirapuram.
