Most people visit an orthodontist for the first time when a cosmetic concern becomes impossible to ignore. That is often years or even decades later than was ideal. This guide explains the right ages to see an orthodontist for the first time, the signs that warrant an earlier visit, and exactly what happens at that first consultation - so there is nothing to be nervous about.
For children: age 7 is the benchmark
The Indian Orthodontic Society and the American Association of Orthodontists both recommend a first orthodontic screening at age 7. Most children will not need treatment at that age. The goal is to catch the subset who benefit from early intervention, while the jaws are still developing and problems are cheapest to correct. Crossbites, severe crowding, habit issues and airway concerns all fall in this category.
For teenagers: 11-14 is typical for full treatment
Most full orthodontic treatment with braces or clear aligners is started between ages 11 and 14, once most of the permanent teeth have erupted. Treatment at this age tends to be efficient - the teeth move quickly, compliance is usually good, and the timing aligns well with school schedules. If your child is in this age band and has visible crowding, spacing or bite issues, a consultation is overdue.
For adults: any time is the right time
Adult orthodontics is one of the fastest-growing areas of the specialty. Teeth move at 40 or 55 just as they do at 15 - the biology does not change. What changes is the goals: many adults want a specific cosmetic outcome, treatment of an accumulating problem (worsening gum recession, increasing wear), or preparation for restorative work like implants, crowns or a smile makeover.
Signs that warrant an earlier visit
Our separate post covers this in depth - see 8 signs you may need braces. The short version is: visible crowding, crossbite, jaw pain, difficulty flossing, mouth breathing in children, and persistent habits like thumb sucking past age 4 all justify a visit sooner rather than later.
What happens at a first consultation
A first orthodontic consultation at our Mayur Vihar Phase 2 clinic typically runs 30-45 minutes. It is structured as follows.
- Conversation about your concerns and goals
- Clinical examination of teeth, gums and jaw joints
- Digital 3D intraoral scan (no goopy putty)
- Photographs for the record
- Panoramic and cephalometric X-ray if needed
- Discussion of findings, options and rough timeline
- Written quote with treatment alternatives listed
You leave with a clear picture of whether you need treatment, what the options are, and roughly what it will cost and take. You are not expected to start the same day. Many patients take a few weeks to think, and we are completely comfortable with that.
Myths that stop people booking
Myth: 'I am too old for braces.'
Fact: we routinely treat patients in their 40s, 50s and 60s. Age is rarely a limiting factor. Gum health is more relevant than chronological age.
Myth: 'My teeth are not that bad, it will not help.'
Fact: mild cases often respond very quickly to clear aligners - sometimes in 6-9 months. You may be closer to a result than you think.
Myth: 'I am scared of braces looking awful for 2 years.'
Fact: ceramic braces and Invisalign are both legitimately discreet. Our guide on braces vs Invisalign covers the options honestly.
How to prepare for your first visit
- Bring a list of questions - no question is silly
- Bring any prior dental records or X-rays if you have them
- Wear something you do not mind getting a tiny splash of water on
- If it is a child, bring a small toy or book for the short X-ray wait
- Eat beforehand - it is easier to talk and scan on a full stomach
The first orthodontic visit should feel like a conversation, not a sales pitch. If it feels like a sales pitch, you are in the wrong clinic.
Cost of a consultation
At our clinic, the initial orthodontic screening is complimentary. If a full diagnostic workup with records is needed, that is itemised separately. We believe the consultation should not be a financial barrier - if the assessment says you do not need treatment, you should not feel you have paid to find that out.
Online vs in-person first consultation
For a quick first opinion, or if you are travelling in from Noida or Vasundhara Enclave, an online consultation is a perfectly good first step. We look at photographs you send, ask a few questions, and tell you whether an in-person visit is worth scheduling. For anything that needs a scan, X-ray or appliance, you will need to come in, but the online step saves a wasted trip for cases that are obviously simple or obviously out of scope for our clinic.
What to do after the consultation
Take your written plan home. Think. Get a second opinion if you want one - any confident orthodontist should welcome that. Check reviews, check the clinic's approach as described in our guide to choosing a dental clinic. Only start treatment when you feel settled about the plan and the team.
Booking
If you have been thinking about orthodontic treatment for more than a year, the consultation is overdue. You can book an appointment here, or start with a quick online consultation if you just want a first-pass opinion. There is no pressure and no obligation to proceed.
The best outcomes in orthodontics come from unhurried decisions by well-informed patients. We would rather you book, think for two months, and come back ready - than rush into treatment and second-guess it for the next two years.
