A dental crown - many patients call it a 'cap' - is a tooth-shaped cover that restores a tooth's strength, shape and appearance. You usually need one after a root canal, on a heavily broken or worn tooth, or on top of a dental implant. This guide explains the crown and bridge options available in Delhi, what each costs in 2026, and which lasts longest.

Types of dental crowns and 2026 prices

At our Mayur Vihar clinic, the common options are:

  • Metal-ceramic (PFM) crown: ₹4,000-₹8,000 - strong, time-tested, good value for back teeth
  • Zirconia crown: ₹8,000-₹15,000 - metal-free, very strong and natural-looking, our most popular choice
  • All-ceramic / E-max crown: ₹12,000-₹18,000 - the most lifelike, ideal for front teeth
  • Implant crown: priced with the implant - see our implant cost guide

Which crown should you choose?

For back teeth that take heavy chewing force, a zirconia crown is usually the sweet spot of strength and aesthetics. For a front tooth where appearance matters most, an all-ceramic/E-max crown gives the most natural translucency. PFM crowns remain a solid budget choice. We will always recommend based on the tooth, not the price tag - the same honesty we describe in our how to choose a clinic guide.

How long does a crown last?

A well-made crown on a healthy tooth lasts 10-15 years and often much longer. Longevity depends on your gum health, your bite, and whether you grind your teeth at night (a night guard protects the crown). Good preventive dental care - regular cleaning and check-ups - is the single biggest factor in making restorations last.

Do you always need a crown after a root canal?

For back teeth (molars and premolars), almost always yes - a root-canal-treated tooth becomes brittle and a crown protects it from fracture. For some front teeth, a filling may be enough. Our root canal cost guide explains why the crown should be quoted together with the root canal, not as a surprise add-on later.

Which is better, zirconia or PFM crown?

Zirconia crowns are metal-free, stronger and more natural-looking, making them ideal for most cases. PFM crowns are a reliable, lower-cost option, especially for back teeth.
