A cavity is a small hole caused by tooth decay - bacteria turn sugar into acid, and the acid dissolves the tooth. Caught early, a cavity is a quick, inexpensive filling. Left too long, it reaches the nerve and turns into a root canal or an extraction. That is why we say the cheapest dentistry is the dentistry you do early.
How do you know you have a cavity?
- Sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold that comes and goes
- A visible dark spot, hole or rough edge on a tooth
- Food repeatedly getting stuck in one spot
- A dull ache when chewing on a particular tooth
- Often: no symptoms at all in the early stage - which is why check-ups matter
Tooth-coloured filling cost in Delhi (2026)
At our Mayur Vihar Phase 1 clinic, a tooth-coloured composite filling typically costs ₹1,000-₹3,500 depending on the size and which tooth. Larger or multi-surface fillings cost more; very large cavities may need an inlay/onlay or a crown instead. We use tooth-coloured composite as standard so your filling is invisible - not the old silver amalgam.
What happens if you wait?
Decay does not heal on its own. A small cavity that needs a ₹1,500 filling today becomes, over months, a deep cavity needing a root canal and a crown - often ₹12,000-₹20,000 combined - and a lot more discomfort along the way. Our root canal cost guide shows exactly how that escalation works.
How to prevent cavities
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily, cut down on frequent sugary snacks and drinks, and have a check-up and cleaning every six months so we catch decay while it is still tiny. For children, sealants and fluoride are highly effective - see our kids' dental care guide.
