Bad breath (halitosis) is incredibly common and almost always fixable - but only if you treat the real cause rather than masking it with mints. In around 85% of cases the source is inside the mouth, which is why a dentist is usually the right person to see.
What actually causes bad breath
- Bacteria on the back of the tongue (the single biggest cause)
- Gum disease - bleeding, infected gums release foul-smelling compounds
- Cavities and food trapped in decayed teeth
- Dry mouth - less saliva means more odour (common on waking, with some medicines, and with mouth-breathing)
- Food and habits - onion, garlic, smoking, paan, alcohol
- Less often: sinus infection, acid reflux, diabetes or tonsil stones
How to cure it
Start with the basics done properly: brush twice daily, clean between your teeth, and gently clean your tongue (a tongue scraper helps a lot). Stay hydrated. Then deal with the dental causes - a professional cleaning to clear tartar, gum treatment if your gums are inflamed (see our bleeding gums guide), and fillings for any cavities. Mouthwash helps temporarily but never fixes the underlying problem.
When bad breath means something more
If your breath stays bad despite good oral hygiene and a recent cleaning, the cause may be a hidden cavity, an old leaking filling, a gum pocket, or a non-dental issue like reflux or sinus problems. A proper dental check-up finds the source quickly. Persistent bad breath with bleeding gums or a loose tooth points to advanced gum disease and should not be ignored.
